CHALLENGE

Reposition a heritage footwear brand around sustainability in a crowded market—while creating a direction that felt credible, optimistic, and connected to Earth’s history.

SOLUTION

Translate extensive research and strategic thinking into a clear brand position, cohesive visual language, and internal guide built around Community, Hope, and Action.

IMPACT

The work established a unified strategic and visual foundation for Earth’s planned relaunch. The rollout was paused following the company’s acquisition, but the completed platform provided a clear direction for future brand expression.

Building a Better Earth

Earth was preparing to relaunch its primary brand while expanding its direct-to-consumer business.

The opportunity extended beyond a visual refresh. The company needed a differentiated brand position that could connect its heritage with changing expectations around sustainability, transparency, product quality, and corporate responsibility.

My primary role was translating the strategy team’s research and positioning work into a clear, cohesive visual narrative. I participated in discovery and strategy discussions, helped organize complex ideas, contributed design-led feedback, and developed the presentation and visual system used to communicate the new direction.

Finding a Credible Position

Sustainability had become increasingly important to footwear consumers, but it was also becoming an increasingly crowded and complicated territory.

Many competitors had already established strong environmental positions. At the same time, consumers had become more skeptical of broad claims and expected companies to demonstrate genuine commitments through business practices, products, and measurable progress.

Earth had authentic advantages through its history, name, partnerships, and sustainability initiatives. However, it needed a position that could acknowledge its progress without overstating what had already been accomplished.

The goal was not to present Earth as a perfect sustainability brand. It was to establish an honest, optimistic direction centered on continued improvement and positive action.

From Research to White Space

The strategy process examined:

  • Sustainability and consumer trends

  • The environmental and social impact of fashion

  • Competitive positioning in sustainable footwear

  • Millennial and Gen Z attitudes

  • Earth’s current and future business initiatives

  • Risks associated with sustainability messaging

  • Digital engagement and community participation

Working with the strategy team, I helped synthesize and visualize this material so that the research, business objectives, and brand opportunity could be understood as one connected story.

The work revealed three strategic ideas:

Community
Progress depends on shared values and collective participation.

Hope
The brand should acknowledge reality while inspiring optimism, empathy, and integrity.

Action
Meaningful progress matters more than promotional claims.

Together, these ideas established the brand position:

Building a Better Earth

This direction connected the company’s name and heritage with a broader commitment to improving both people and the planet.

COMMUNITY. HOPE. ACTION.

Three strategic ideas became one ownable position:
Building a Better Earth.

Translating the Strategy into a Brand

My role was to transform the strategic foundation into a visual and verbal system that leaders, employees, partners, and creative teams could understand and use.

I designed the positioning presentation, established the visual hierarchy, organized extensive research and strategic content, and created a visual narrative that made the evolution from marketplace insight to brand position clear.

As the work developed, I also provided design-led consultation around messaging and helped refine areas where the narrative could become more focused or emotionally engaging.

The resulting brand platform included:

  • Purpose

  • Way

  • Impact

  • Brand attributes

  • Values

  • Voice and tone

  • Messaging territories

  • Brand manifesto

Purpose, Way and Impact

Rather than relying on a traditional mission, vision, and values structure, the strategy used a more direct framework.

Purpose
To change the world through positive actions.

Way
Love and respect for humanity, with a desire to get a little better every day.

Impact
Contagious optimism.

These statements gave the brand a memorable internal framework and connected strategic intent with the way Earth would communicate and behave.

Community. Hope. Action.

Three strategic ideas became one ownable position:

Creating the Visual Language

The visual identity guide translated the positioning into a more expressive brand world.

The guide explored and documented:

  • Logo studies and usage

  • Color palette

  • Typography

  • Circular graphic elements

  • Lifestyle imagery

  • Audience representation

  • Brand attributes

  • Page and communication examples

  • Application mockups

The visual direction balanced optimism and natural references with a more contemporary, inclusive lifestyle sensibility.

An internal video was also created to introduce the new brand direction emotionally. It functioned as a moving mood board—bringing the intended energy, imagery, values, and aspirations of the brand to life.

The Result

The work established a cohesive strategic and visual foundation for Earth’s relaunch, connecting its heritage with a more contemporary position centered on sustainability, optimism, and meaningful progress.

The new direction began moving into production, including an initial season of footwear featuring elements of the refreshed branding. Soon afterward, the company was acquired and the brand was reset under new ownership, ending the broader rollout before its long-term market impact could be measured.
